Time for the monthly recap of Whats Coco Reading!
Another thing that resulted from COVID: I started tracking my reading. I know there are apps for that but I am old school and move slowly. In 2020, I tracked the 65 books that I read via a pad and pen. 2021, I moved on to an Excel spreadsheet (I can confidently say I use Excel and Numbers when I update my resume) and now in 2022 I have updated my Excel spreadsheet to include notes for each book.
This month I read a total of 8 books!
All the Feels by Olivia Dade
The Hookup Dilemma by Constance Gilliam
The Girl with Stars in Her Eyes by Xio Axelrod
The End of Men by Christina Sweeney-Baird
Meet Me in Another Life by Catriona Silvey
My Ride or Die by Leslie Cohen
The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
30 Things I Love About Myself by Radhika Sanghani
I touched upon 30 Things I Love About Myself in another post so let's discuss the rest! Of this bunch, the two that grabbed me were The End of Men and The Girl With Stars in Her Eyes.
The End of Men is about a pandemic that hits the world but it only kills men. You won't read any spoilers from me but what I really enjoyed about this book was the honest reactions of some of the characters and how they dealt with this. There was no false hope and given what we have seen with our own pandemic, you could really see this happening. I found it interesting that the author actually started writing this book in 2018! COVID wasn't even a thought then so it was amazing to read some of the parallels.
The Girl With Stars in Her Eyes was just an enjoyable read. Was it ultra realistic? Nah. Could I empathize with these characters and understand where they were coming from? Absolutely! I also enjoyed the communication. There wasn't any stupid unnecessary lying like you see in our favorite Hallmark movies. Sidebar, I love Hallmark movies but most of them would be much shorter if people would simply communicate, but I digress. These characters were intelligent, flawed, relatable and you will cheer for our heroine.
The rest of the books I read were enjoyable but not stand outs with the exception of Meet Me in Another Life. I was so excited for the book and while it was a good book the ending pissed me off. So read it and let's discuss! There were things I loved such as the changing dynamic between the two main characters and then I hated the twist at the end which admittedly now that I think of it, I should have seen coming.
Sound off! What books did you love or loathe this month?
